The Communications Department’s mission is to provide the tools, strategies, products and programs to support the brand and its content, and to continually grow Brookings’s impact and effectiveness as a change agent for public policy in the United States and around the world. This purpose is realized if we help our scholars raise awareness, set the agenda and shape the debate around the public policy issues they choose to address.
The Director, Brookings Creative Lab is a dynamic, innovative, and narrative-driven leader of all Central Communications efforts on data visualizations and infographics, interactive digital assets, video, and graphic design. Sets creative vision for and leads the Brookings Creative Lab, including training scholars, research staff, and design staff on cutting-edge technology at the intersection of data, graphic design, and narratives. Works closely and harmoniously with web, social media, and studio teams to bring Brookings scholarship to life in cutting-edge digital formats. Has a hand in the shape and design of individual projects but won’t necessarily be primary designer or coder—this role is for the leader of that team of cutting-edge designers and storytellers.
Position Reports To:
Design and Storytelling (50%)
Lead production of graphics and visualizations across to support policy research and storytelling across all platforms. Oversee Creative Lab collaborations with scholars, Communications Directors and other Brookings staff to develop and implement design and video ideas to support the Institution and scholars’ work. Distill qualitative and quantitative insights to visually tell stories to supplement or complement written narratives on print, online and social media. Conceptualize and write treatments, scripts, illustrations, infographics, data visualization and layouts. Supervise Video team projects within Creative Lab.
Professional Development and Capacity Building (30%)
Lead Creative Lab efforts to maintain high quality standards and creative innovation for all Brookings design and multimedia productions. Stay abreast of, make recommendations, and assist with the integration of new technologies for the web, studio, and field. Develop education and training programs for Brookings staff, to ensure full comprehension of the capabilities and operating procedures of the Brookings Creative Lab.
Oversee proper file management and backup; Conduct annual reviews and evaluations of members of the Brookings Creative Lab.
