I vividly remember the day I started to love podcasts. It was late December 2014 and several of my coworkers and I were gathering for a very important and anticipated meeting. The agenda? An intense discussion of the finale of the first season of NPR’s breakout hit podcast – Serial. It was my first “must-listen” podcast and the excitement my colleagues and I shared in downloading each new episode was palpable.
Serial served as a gateway podcast for me and many others. True crime, daily news, bourbon reviews, and marketing and advertising analyses are now part of my weekly media diet, all consumed via podcasts. And I’m not alone. Based on data from Edison Research and Triton Digital shared by the Pew Research Center, over 1 in 4 Americans 12 and older listened to a podcast in the previous month.
Other recent headlines speak to the rise of podcasts as an important marketing and advertising platform:
- “Marketers Add More Podcasts To the Mix”
- “Podcast Revenues Soar”
- “Want A Brand-Safe Ad Environment? Digital Audio May Be Just The Ticket”
It was clearly time to bring the world of podcasts to AAF DC’s AM Ad Buzz events. And we did it in a big way!
The Newseum hosted a live taping of the Designated Drinker Show with special guest Panoply CEO Brendan Monaghan in front of an audience of AAF DC members and guests. Host Louise Salas and Resident Barkeep Gina Chersevani chatted with Brendan about their podcast journeys, giving the audience a unique opportunity to hear about podcast creation, curation, marketing, and advertising.
I could easily blog about the start of Panoply as a content and advertising company, the evolution of the Designated Drinker Show, how important it is to talk with your audience instead of at them, and the advertising opportunities that podcasts bring about — vast opportunities driven by the ability for audience targeting and ads weaved into content that people are passionate about. But you’d be much better off just enjoying the podcast.
So mix yourself a special buzzworthy mocktail (or cocktail!), download or stream Designated Drinker Show Episode 44 from iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, or the web, and get ready to join the podcast party.
Stay tuned for our next AM Ad Buzz event next month, and follow us on Twitter using @AAF_DC and #AMAdBuzz.
